Hugh Carthy has had a difficult 2022 season, but has discovered good form at the late
Tour de Langkawi. Now, within a shot of the win in the overall classification, the Briton looks to relatively salvage his season.
“There are still five stages to go. So that’s a chance to chip away and maybe try and take the overall lead. We'll see what happens in the next few days," the
EF Education-EasyPost leader told Cyclingnews at the end of the fourth stage yesterday. Carthy has finished second in the queen stage to Genting Highlands on the third day of the competition, creating a 23-second gap back to Iván Sosa.
The Colombian is not frequently the most consistent rider in the peloton, and Carthy is within striking distance of an important win for the American team - although the UCI rankings have been sealed, with Lotto Soudal and Israel - Premier Tech set to relegate. The upcoming two stages will be relatively flat, with the only true opportunity for Carthy being stage 7 into Gunung Raya for a summit finish with 13.3 kilometers at 6%.
“It's a proper climb, it's a short stage as well so it should be a proper all-out effort with no tiredness and the like," he commented on what should be the final decisive day of the race. "Still in the heat, you don't know, I could have a bad day. I could have a good day. Someone else could have a good day, but we'll see what happens.”
“There are bonus sprints, but in the finish is actually where the decent seconds are, and I’m not going to be up there in the finish in the top three of a sprint stage. So I’ll have to wait until probably stage 7 and see what happens there," he hinted. Yesterday's stage was won by Jakub Mareczko, and today should see another bunch sprint in the town of Kulim.
