Patrick Lefevere says he doesn’t know whether Remco
Evenepoel will stay or go, but he does know who’s been chasing him. Speaking in
his Het Nieuwsblad column, the former Soudal – Quick-Step team boss made it
clear that transfer rumours have dogged Evenepoel for years, and Red Bull – BORA
– hansgrohe has never backed off.
"Leave or stay, honestly: I don't know," Lefevere
wrote. "I only know the context: BORA manager Ralph Denk has been luring
Remco around for four years. He made him an initial proposal back then that
still stings my eyes. After that, it never stopped: INEOS Grenadiers, at one
point even Lidl-Trek, I understand, and always BORA-hansgrohe."
Evenepoel is under contract until the end of 2026, and Specialized
also remains a sponsor for another year. That detail matters, Lefevere noted,
because team sponsors are no longer tied to Evenepoel’s presence. “At Soudal,
that clause was included in the first year, but it's no longer there.”
He laid out three possibilities: a quiet resolution, a labor
court battle, or just more empty noise. “Perhaps all parties will reach an
agreement soon, or perhaps we're on our way to a legal battle in the labor
court. Or perhaps – in true Tour tradition – it's a storm in a teacup, and
Remco will simply stay where he is.”
Evenepoel is currently battling Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour de France. But, by the sounds of things, he will be battling in a different jersey at some point in the future.
Lefevere also accused the media of feeding the narrative.
“Are the rumors getting worse? That's your opinion. You're a journalist, and
how many journalists are there? They're trying to make a mountain out of a
molehill. A Dutch journalist once said to me, 'Patrick, is there any news?' I
said no. 'Well, then we'll make news.' Voilà, that's what we're working on
now."
