It's not every day
Guillaume Martin gets to raise his hands in victory, but today was one such special occasion. You would have a hard time looking for a bigger favourite at the start of
Classic Grand Besançon Doubs and the
Groupama - FDJ rider confirmed predictions to triumph in front of José Manuel Díaz (Burgos Burpellet BH) and compatriot Clément Berthet (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).
"I don't win often, it's been a while since I raised my arms, so we have to savor it!" he reacted afterwards. On that matter, Martin's previous victory dates all the way back to August 2022, when he won a stage at Tour de l'Ain and later also the GC.
After the finish, he looked back at the day's progress and his team's control of the race:
"All day long, I wasn't super confident. My legs were hurting from the fictitious start, my bronchi were a bit tight, which is quite common for me. On the other hand, after the first climb, I felt that my legs weren't responding so badly, and the last climb was quite clear, we accelerated from the start with Clément Braz Afonso who set a big tempo. I thank him, and also all my teammates, we had a perfect day tactically."
He continued with his strategy on the final climb where he made the difference:
"After a kilometer or two of climbing, there was a hairpin bend, and we saw that there was a small break with the rest of the group. Clément told me, encouraged me to go for it, and in the perfect scenario it was at that moment that I imagined attacking anyway. Then it was only resistance until the summit."
The racing in Jura mountains continues with two more one-day races. Tomorrow will see another steep uphill finish. Good news for Martin - the climb is even longer than today's. "It bodes well for tomorrow, the Tour du Jura generally suits me better than the Classic Grand Besançon. There haven't been many victories in the team since the beginning of the year, so it's certain that we don't want to stop there, it's time to collect," he concludes.
