Stage 2 of Gran Camiño was a rainy and hilly day, not the best suited to Jonas Vingegaard. Still, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider's climbing capacity was above the rest of the field, and he attacked towards a solo win and the race lead.
A rainy day in Galicia, it made it tough for the entire peloton. Plenty riders tried taking advantage of the weather conditions. 12 riders formed the day's breakaway: Embret Svestad-Bardseng, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Tiago Antunes, Alex Molenaar, Enekoitz Azparren, Davide Bais, Diego Uriarte, Jorge Arcas, José Manuel Díaz, Frederico Figueiredo, Andrea Pietrobon and Sebastian Berwick.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike was left with the chasing behind in the peloton, as the group split along the many climbs that were ridden throughout the day. Xabier Mikel Azparren and Alex Molenaar were the strongest from the front group and distanced the rest, heading into the final ascent in front.
EF Education and INEOS had numbers and battled for positioning with Visma however the Dutch team entered the final climb in front. Wilco Kelderman pushed the pace and Jonas Vingegaard attacked right at the base - an unusual tactic. Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda and Egan Bernal bridged across whilst Molenaar was caught right after.
The Dane did not ask for a relay from his rivals even on the shallow climb, but in the final kilometer of the ascent brutally dropped both with another attack. It was a dominant win, that propels Vingegaard into the spot of man to beat for the overall classification.
Egan Bernal sprinted to second place ahead of Cepeda almost half a minute behind; Cian Uijtdebroeks finished fourth with a promising performance.
