Lennard Kämna was training in Tenerife together with BORA - hansgrohe teammates when, earlier this week, he was hit by a car at speed and suffered bad injuries. Several broken ribs and lung contusions were the result of the accident, but the German rider has now been moved out of intensive care.
“Lennard has taken a huge step forward. The fact that he can now be transferred to the normal ward is very good news," team DS Ralph Denk said in an update provided by the team this Sunday morning. "I would like to thank the medical team on Tenerife and our Medical Department for their great efforts over the last few days. We wish Lennard continued strength for a speedy recovery.”
Kämna was preparing for the Giro d'Italia up in altitude where several team riders and staff were present. A car turned in the direction of Kämna who could not avoid an accident that could've had even worst consequences. Luckily, the evolution of his injuries is positive at the time being.
In an Instagram story, Kämna himself has provided an update on the situation: "Hey guys. I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the messages of support and encouragement you've sent my way. Your kindness and thoughtfulness have truly meant the world to me during this challenging time. Rest assured, I'm receiving the best possible care and support to aid in my recovery. I will be back soon," he assured.
