It was an excellent day for
Ineos Grenadiers in the
Tour de France.
Tom Pidcock took his first stage victory while teammate
Geraint Thomas finished in 7th position, keeping the team’s hope alive for GC.
Thomas says he could have tried to sprint but did not want to come between Pogacar and Vingegaard. “I felt good, I felt like I could have gone in that sprint, but unfortunately, they got the elbows out a bit more. I was trying just not to get carried away when they were jumping. Ride at pace, obviously accelerate, but not too much,” Thomas told Velonews.
Thomas is impressed by his teammate for achieving such a feat, given it is one of the most challenging climbs in the tour.“It’s great to see him doing well. The second Brit to win up here it is a nice accolade to have. It’s fantastic for him. He is a super talent. He has been riding really well. He wasn’t great yesterday, but he had the opportunity to go in the move today, and looking at the guys in the break, we were confident that he could do something,” Thomas concluded.
He has improved his GC standing and now holds 3rd position, 2 minutes and 26 seconds behind overall leader Vingegaard and only 4 seconds behind Pogacar.
