Geraint Thomas has managed to keep INEOS Grenadiers' hope for GC alive after today’s performance in Col du Granon. The 2018 Tour winner finished 4th, 2 minutes and 26 seconds behind stage winner Jonas Vingegaard.
“I was just trying to get to the top as quick as I could,” Thomas told Velonews. He was impressed by Jumbo-Visma's performance today as they worked together to defeat Pogacar. "It was an incredible race. They had the overtime, and they used it well. We could have seen this coming, but on the Galibier, everyone was already alone or in pairs. That was a madhouse. Then it all came together, but on the Col du Granon, it all fell apart again," Thomas told Velonews.
Team manager Rod Ellingworth believes Thomas is the key to victory for INEOS Grenadiers. "He never rode in the red and had a good result. He has now dropped to fourth in the general classification, but his position is still strong. But it's still a long way to Paris. Tomorrow will be a tough day for everyone, and The key lies in recovery and who recovers best. I'm sure some people will have leg pain tomorrow. But Geraint is thinking about the long term. He is mentally very strong,” said Ellingworth. Thomas currently holds the fourth position in GC , 1 minute and 38 seconds behind overall leader Vingegaard.
