On the eve of the final mountain stage of the race, ending at Bola del Mundo, very few expected any GC action on a flat transition stage. Whilst there definitely weren't big differences at the finish, the two candidates for overall victory saw their gap extend as Jonas Vingegaard captured free time.
What happened was that in the intermediate sprint in Salamanca today, there were 4 and 2 seconds available to the peloton due to the lack of riders in the breakaway, despite the large amount of teams that have not gathered a result from this race. With no printers also fighting for the points classification, the GC men had an open opportunity to capture time, in a GC where the battle for victory and podium is being separated by a few seconds.
Visma pushed the pace and led Jonas Vingegaard to a comfortable 4 second gain, whilst UAE was nowhere to be seen and see João Almeida's disadvantage grow back out to 44 seconds with one stage to get them back. It remains to be seen whether the Portuguese can get them back in the 12-kilometer climb, an unlikely feat, however one that is not impossible taking into consideration Vingegaard's illness that has been affecting him over the past week.
Everything else in the overall classification however has remained the same with Tom Pidcock going into stage 20 still holding on to the podium, 2:43 minutes back on the race leader and with 39 seconds over Jai Hindley who is certain to attack the final summit finish. Giulio Pellizzari follows, with 58 seconds of lead over Matthew Riccitello who is his rival for the youth classification. Riccitello and Gall's fith for sixth place is the closest with only 3 seconds between the two. Sepp Kuss, Torstein Traeen and Matteo Jorgenson conclude the Top10, with few chances of anyone coming in.
