Stage 2 was likely to be the queen stage of the 2026
Tour Down Under, however few would've expected the gaps created to be so large.
UAE Team Emirates - XRG was head and shoulders above the rest of the field today, and
by the time Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez arrived to Uraidla, they already carried a minute over their closest competitors, which puts them in a luxurious position to win the race.
The finale was difficult, with the ascent of the Corkscrew providing a perfect launchpad for the climbers to attack. That is exactly what UAE did, with Adam Yates launching
Jay Vine up the steepest part of the climb, and with
Jhonatan Narváez being the only rider able to then close the gap. The two rode together and then took full advantage of the rolling finale to further extend their gap against a group that neither had the legs or the cooperation to close down the attack.
The duo gained 58 seconds on the road, plus bonus time on the competition. It is an extremely large difference, rarely or ever seen before in this race. Vine now leads the race with 6 seconds over his teammate and 1:05 minutes over Mauro Schmid who is the closest competitor and favourite for the podium now. In the first chasing group we also saw Andreas Kron, Filippo Zana, Natnael Tesfatsion, Adam Yates, Matteo Sobrero, Harry Sweeny and Marco Brenner, who now make up for most of the positions that follow in the Top10.
It was a stage with several surprises and disappointments, as several of the big favourites did not perform. Santiago Buitrago and Luke Plapp both lost 1:43 minutes; Finn Fisher-Black and Simone Velasco lost 2:17 whilst Corbin Strong lost over 11 minutes and was nowhere to be seen. All of this eventually played a role in UAE's domination.
Nordics dominate the other classifications
The points classification continues to be led by Tobias Lund Andresen, however this has naturally come down with today's stage results.
Jhonatan Narváez specially, with his versatility, could become a danger for the Dane. In the KOM classification Martin Urianstad has ridden into today's breakaway to defend it strongly, building a gap over everyone except for Pepijn Reinderink who is eager to put up a fight. In the Youth classification Michael Leonard defended himself strongly and remains in the lead, only with Andrea Raccagni tied on time, whilst everyone else is over a minunte behind.
