Chris Froome may be one of the greatest Grand Tour riders of all time but even he could not hide just how difficult he found the notoriously challenging 267 km Melbourne to Warrnambool.
“I came here looking for a hard training ride and that’s exactly what I got," the seven-time Grand Tour winner said following the conclusion of the race. "Finished completely cross-eyed over the finish line there....what a day, that was an amazing race!"
Froome would come home in 12th position, 5:14 down on the eventual winner Tristan Saunders, but for the now 37-year-old Israel-Premier Tech rider, it was always more about getting extra race kilometres in his legs to prepare for the upcoming season rather than another victory to add to his extensive palmares.
“Congrats to whoever came over the line first, I didn’t actually get to see that far ahead,” said Froome. “Yeah that was a brutal but great event.”
