Former Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman sees appeal denied after being found guilty of ordering testosterone for doping purposes

Richard Freeman, the former doctor of British Cycling and Team Sky has seen his appeal to overturn a guilty verdict in regard to ordering testosterone for doping purposes denied, meaning he will now be officially struck off the medical register.

After initially being found guilty back in 2021, Freeman who admitted to 18 of the 22 charges relating to the ordering of Testogel to British Cycling headquarters in 2011, was appealing against the adjudged severity of the verdict handed to him. However, an appeal made to the High Court has now been thrown out with the judge revealing he saw nothing wrong with the original verdict.

Alongside this trial, Freeman is also currently under investigation for two charges from UK Anti-Doping in relation to the former doctors ordering of the testosterone. In an official statement, UKAD said "UK Anti-Doping notes the dismissal of Dr Richard Freeman’s appeal by the High Court, following an appeal hearing in December 2022. The former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor lodged an appeal at the High Court against a decision made by the independent Medical Practitioners Tribunal (MPT) in March 2021."

“Ukad’s case before the independent National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) was paused in June 2021 until the conclusion of the High Court appeal. Following confirmation of the outcome of the High Court appeal today, Ukad will be contacting the NADP and Dr Freeman’s representatives with a view to resuming its proceedings against him. Dr Freeman is charged with two anti-doping rule violations, and remains provisionally suspended by Ukad.”
