Enric Mas is heading into Liege–Bastogne–Lirge full of motivation. The Mallorcan rider brings to a close the first block of his season today — one that has been more successful than usual, highlighted by podium finishes at both the Volta a Catalunya and the Itzulia Basque Country. Now, after being forced to abandon La Flèche Wallonne, he hopes to deliver a strong performance in La Doyenne.
Reflecting on what happened at La Flèche Wallonne in midweek, Mas admitted: "It was a disaster. I made a mistake — I thought the race would really kick off with 60 km to go, so I stayed in light clothing and ended up freezing. That’s the reality."
Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, Mas shared his thoughts on the challenge that awaits: "It’s different from the races I’ve done before. The final features a series of short, steep climbs that will be brutally tough, although I think the race will really open up earlier. With 100 km to go, the tension starts — narrow roads, sharp right- and left-hand bends — and from there, everything changes."
Finally, summing up his early season form, Mas was positive: "Overall, it’s been a good start. I struggled a bit early on, but then I improved in Catalunya and the Basque Country. Now, I’m looking to take another step forward here."
