The second day of racing at the
Tour de Romandie was suited to the puncheurs, and
Dylan Teuns has continued his run of form to take an impressive stage win in Romont after capturing Rohan Dennis in the very finale of the stage.
In a post-race interview, Teuns said that he had his sights on this stage and that he knew in the final ascent that it was one that suited him perfectly: “When I looked at the profile, I knew that this would be a finish that was made for me. My teammates said that too, because two or three years ago this arrival [Romont] was already in the race. And when we crossed the finish line here [for the first time], I immediately believed in my chances. But you still have to wait until the last time.”
Teuns entered the final climb well positioned, and immediately had to react to a move from Brandon McNulty. Right after, Rohan Dennis attacked too. “That attack by Rohan Dennis surprised me. He went from very far. I wanted to counter his attack, but he hit a gap of several meters," he said. "As a result, I had to sprint early and went full throttle 450 meters before the finish."
As it happened, the Belgian timed his move to absolute perfection, overtaking Dennis only in the very last meters of the stage. “However, I was confident, but I also knew that timing would be very important. I initially wanted to be in the front on the last two corners, but by then I was already chasing. I still had to close the gap in the last 100 meters. That was very tough," he added.
“This is a great feeling. After my victory in the Flèche Wallone, my confidence is high and it is nice to now take my second victory of the season," he concluded. With a win in the bag, Bahrain will now focus on the general standings where Teuns, Damiano Caruso and Gino Mader will play a role.
