Despite the hilly nature of the race, it was a calm day in the peloton, as everyone pointed their focus towards the finale of the stage. The breakaway was caught with 29 kilometers to go, as a crash with 15 kilometers to go a crash disrupted the order of the peloton. Race leader Ethan Hayter crashed, aswell as the likes of Rigoberto Uran, Sergio Higuita, Ion Izagirre, which saw a split in the peloton.
Rémi Cavagna attacked with six kilometers to go to try and antecipate the finale, however the furious leadout saw him caught before the final hilltop.
Brandon McNulty attacked at the base of the final climb, followed by Rohan Dennis who made a move over the top. The Australian seemed to be on his way to the stage win, only to be chased down by Dylan Teuns who only managed to catch Dennis in the closing meters of the stage in what was a dramatic finale. A gap emerged to those behind, with Marc Hirschi finishing third.
