The thirteenth stage of Giro d'Italia was a big show of Mads Pedersen who didn't find his equal in the uphill sprint in Vicenza. Behind, Dorian Godon was one of the fastest man and eventually crossed the line in a fifth place. Yet the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider was far from satisfied.
"I didn't necessarily come for fifth place," Godon made his ambitions clear in an interview afterwards. The hilly stage 13 was certainly one that piqued the 28-year-old Frenchman's interest already beforehand. "It was definitely the stage I had ticked off."
"I feel like things are going pretty well at the moment. I've been working a good part of the year to try to win a stage at the Giro. I was really well surrounded in the finale. I managed my climbs well. Stan [Dewulf] put us back in position really well as we approached the finale. It was really great. He's building up a lot of power too, so that's nice," explained the Frenchman.
"Afterwards, I was on Nico's [Prodhomme] wheel to be the first at the bend. I didn't necessarily be in the lead, but I wanted to arrive with a bit of momentum." Unfortunately, Godon lost Prodhomme's wheel due to a small mechanical problem, which costed him a few positions in run-up for the final sprint.
"I derailed two kilometers in, so I lost Nico's wheel. I thought the race was over, because I couldn't get the chain back on. So, I was far behind. I made an effort to try to get back up and get Nico's wheel. I managed my climb a bit until 300 meters before putting everything in until the line. I made a big comeback. Fifth is better than nothing, but I was hoping for much better. I had the legs to do much better," he concluded.
