The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia delivered one of the wildest finales of this year’s race, with Igor Arrieta snatching victory from Afonso Eulálio in the final metres after a chaotic sequence of crashes, mistakes and reversals of fortune.
While Arrieta celebrated the biggest win of his career for UAE Team Emirates - XRG, Afonso Eulálio still had plenty to smile about. The Portuguese rider moved into the race lead and took over the pink jersey from Giulio Ciccone after an extraordinary day in southern Italy.
The stage from Praia a Mare looked dangerous on paper long before the riders rolled out. Despite featuring only two categorised climbs, the route constantly twisted up and down through narrow and rain-soaked roads. The key obstacle was the Montagna Grande di Viggiano, a long second category ascent with several brutal ramps above ten percent, positioned around forty kilometres from the finish.
From the opening kilometres the pace was relentless. Heavy rain turned the roads treacherous, but it did little to discourage attacks. Victor Campenaerts was among the most aggressive riders early on for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, while Giulio Ciccone himself even briefly joined one of the opening moves.
The repeated accelerations quickly split the peloton to pieces. With around 180 kilometres still remaining, barely forty riders were left in the main group, although all of the overall contenders were still present.

That moment opened the door for a dangerous breakaway. Afonso Eulálio escaped alongside former race leader Guillermo Thomas Silva and Einer Rubio. Campenaerts later bridged across together with Gianmarco Garofoli, before more riders joined the move, including Jhonatan Narváez, Igor Arrieta, Ben Turner, Lorenzo Milesi, Manuele Tarozzi, Martin Tjotta, Christian Scaroni and Darren Rafferty.
Behind them, Lidl-Trek tried to control the gap through the work of Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, but Ciccone’s team was already running out of support riders. Later, Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe also came to the front to help with the chase.
As the race approached the Montagna Grande di Viggiano, Igor Arrieta sensed hesitation behind and launched a decisive attack from the breakaway. The young Spaniard quickly opened a sizeable advantage while the chasing group struggled to organise itself. Scaroni attempted to react, but his acceleration mainly served to bring Eulálio across to the lone leader.

The Portuguese rider bridged the gap just before the summit, and the pair immediately committed to a full gas alliance over the rolling terrain that followed. Behind them, the peloton never managed to regain control. Giulio Ciccone, isolated except for Derek Gee, eventually tried to chase personally, but the move had already gone too far up the road.
With forty kilometres remaining, the advantage ballooned from two minutes to nearly four. Afonso Eulálio was suddenly virtual race leader and the pink jersey was slipping away from Ciccone kilometre after kilometre.
Then came the madness. Inside the final ten kilometres, Igor Arrieta crashed while taking risks on a wet descent. The Spaniard slid out in a corner and lost more than thirty seconds. Eulálio suddenly appeared to be riding toward both the stage victory and the overall lead.

But with seven kilometres remaining, the Portuguese rider crashed in almost identical fashion. In an instant, the race was turned upside down again.
The two leaders regrouped and continued together, although Eulálio seemed more focused on securing maximum time for the general classification than fighting for the stage itself. Yet the drama was not finished. Moments later, Igor Arrieta took a wrong turn and briefly lost contact once again.
Even then, the Spaniard refused to give up. In the final kilometre Igor Arrieta launched one last desperate pursuit, gradually closing the gap metre by metre before finally overtaking Afonso Eulálio right at the line to complete a stunning comeback victory.
It was a finale that seemed to rewrite itself every few seconds, and one that could become one of the defining stages of this year’s Giro d'Italia.

Today was one of those days that reminds everyone why the Giro d'Italia remains one of the most unpredictable and captivating races in cycling. Every rider in the peloton endured a brutal day on the bike. Attacks, counter-attacks, crashes, rain, relentless rain, freezing… and at the end of it all came the victory of Igor Arrieta and yet another change in the race lead, with Portugal’s Afonso Eulálio stepping onto the podium to pull on the Maglia Rosa.
It was a finale worthy of a dramatic movie script. First, it looked as though Eulálio was riding towards the biggest victory of his career after Arrieta crashed on one of the treacherous descents. But the chaos was far from over. With seven kilometres remaining, it was the Portuguese rider from Bahrain - Victorious who hit the ground, allowing the young Spaniard from UAE Team Emirates - XRG to claw his way back to the front of the race.
Then came another twist. With less than two kilometres to go, Arrieta appeared to lose control of his bike after it bounced off a wet manhole cover, sending him straight on and seemingly handing Eulálio a clear path to victory. But the Spaniard refused to surrender.
Arrieta launched one final desperate chase. Meter by meter he closed the gap, catching the young Portuguese rider just a few hundred metres from the finish line before powering away to claim victory in what instantly became one of the most dramatic stages of this year’s race.
For the young rider from Figueira da Foz, however, the day still ended with a moment beyond his wildest dreams. Pulling on the Maglia Rosa means far more than simply leading the race, it is confirmation of his immense talent and extraordinary rise through the sport. Just over a year ago, Eulálio was racing for the Continental squad ABTF Betão - Feirense. Today, he stands at the top of the overall classification in Italy’s biggest race.
Afonso Eulálio’s story is proof that when dreams truly drive your life, the only option is to roll up your sleeves and fight for them with everything you have.

A day to remember, for many reasons. Of course, being Portuguese, there is a big bias towards the success of Afonso Eulálio. A rider who came up from the local ranks, made a massive surprise move to the World Tour...
I got to interview him one-on-one before his first race as a World Tour rider and once again this December after he showed his true potential throughout a breakthrough season. A shock? No, he is a tremendous rider, not at that 10/10 level, but with that 'it factor'.
A rider who looks to be great in the long climbs, the short climbs, and have great endurance - something that is more important now than in the past few decades. He's got all the right skillset to pull off what he did today, as he is simultaneously a great rider but someone without a big name, who didn't have anyone specifically covering for him.
A massive and proper breakaway fight, extreme weather conditions to increase the variables on all riders - some blew up, looking at Einer Rubio who might have moved to pink otherwise. In the peloton Lidl-Trek started the day well, and they chased on with almost everything, but it was not possible to close that gap.
Yes, they could've burned Derek Gee for a chance (emphasis on chance) staying in pink, but I can see why that was not worth it to them. If Ciccone chased on, he would burn himself and then lose the jersey anyway. No-one wanted to chase, but you can't point the finger towards any specific team over that situation, as on paper Eulálio and Arrieta are not proven Grand Tour riders.
The GC fight remains the same for the podium, but Eulálio and Arrieta now provide the 'what if' factors that the Giro often throw. And both riders are great climbers, don't underestimate them, specially if they finish on the Top10 due to this. They were the two strongest climbers in the breakaway and made the difference where it mattered.
That stage finale, one for the ages... Arrieta crashed and it's over. Eulálio crashes and is injured, they are back together and it looks to be over for Eulálio. Then overcooking a corner buried Arrieta's chances once again, I thought. The Spaniard made an unbelievable recovery then, aided by Euláliio's emptiness and injury. A very understandibly emotional win, well deserved; and Eulálio's pink jersey is also very well deserved.

A day to remember for Spanish cycling, as Igor Arrieta claimed his first Grand Tour victory after a fierce battle with Afonso Eulálio and the cycling gods themselves. At just 23 years of age, the Navarrese rider conquered the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia with a remarkable display of resilience, grit and determination.
Arrieta attacked from a large breakaway group inside the final 50 kilometres of the stage. Later on, however, the Portuguese rider Eulálio joined him at the front, setting up a dramatic finale in which both riders eventually crashed.
The UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider overshot a corner with less than two kilometres remaining, sliding off down an escape road. But Arrieta immediately got going again and launched one final effort, catching and overtaking the Bahrain Victorious rider right on the finish line in Potenza.

It was a prestigious victory for a rider whose contract expires in December, and who will now certainly have no shortage of interested teams lining up for his signature.
Meanwhile, it was yet another disastrous day in what has so far been a chaotic and ill-fated Giro for the main contenders for the Maglia Rosa in Rome. The race is certainly missing Tadej Pogacar while he is absent from the start list.
