The Cycling World Championships could be a step closer to returning to Denmark after the nation officially submitted the candidacy to host the 2029 edition.
Not since 2011 in Copenhagen have the World Championships made their way to the cycling-mad nation that can boasts stars such as Jonas Vingegaard, Mads Pedersen and Magnus Cort Nielsen among many others.
“Today we are taking an important step towards bringing the World Cycling Championships to Denmark,” said Jakob Engel-Schmidt Siger, the Danish Minister of Culture. “This after several years of hard work. I believe it is an event that will create excitement throughout the country. Denmark is a small country, but a big cycling nation. A World Championship on Danish soil would therefore be completely justified.”
Back in 2011, it was Mark Cavendish who took the rainbow jersey. This time around however, a more Classics suited rider may be more favoured. “We believe that Copenhagen can provide a fantastic backdrop for the World Championship. In addition, we think we can design a challenging course where the technically stronger riders will emerge," Morten Anderson, the chairman of the Danish cycling union, previously told TV2.
