Stage 8 winner Luke Plapp put in an admirable effort of 33:14. Stage 9 winner Wout van Aert was a little slower at 33:39. Pre-stage favourite
Joshua Tarling meanwhile, finished 7 seconds slower than Hoole, a contentious point of the day after
the Welshman had been slowed on course by a day dreaming Mikkel Honore. The next rider to get close to the fastest times of the day was Soudal - Quick-Step's Mattia Cattaneo. The Italian crossed the line with the provisional 4th fastest time, just 23 seconds down on Hoole.
When the likes of Primoz Roglic, Egan Bernal and the Yates brothers were out on course, the weather changed, and the rain began to fall on the riders. By the time Roglic reached the finishing line, the Slovenian was riding in heavy rain. As such, his time of 33:45, losing more than a minute to Daan Hoole, wasn't a massive surprise.
Despite the big time loss to Hoole, Roglic was actually gaining time on almost all of his GC rivals.
Juan Ayuso however, was riding like a man possessed, unhindered by the wet conditions. So good was the Spaniard that he was actually threatening to take the Maglia Rosa off his teammate,
Isaac del Toro. By the time he crossed the line though, Ayuso had lost time to Roglic, 1:34 down on Hoole, giving Del Toro more than enough leeway to keep the race lead.
