Colombian cyclist Juan David Cárdenas, just 19 years old, tragically lost his life on Monday in a traffic accident while training on a road in the Boyacá region of Colombia. This is yet another tragedy following on from the likes of Sara Piffer and Muriel Furrer over the last months.
According to Captain Jonny Camilo González, Chief of Traffic and Transport for the Boyacá Police, the accident occurred during one of Cárdenas' regular training sessions on the road connecting Paipa and Tunja, the department's capital.
The young cyclist collided with a van that was conducting maintenance work on the road, in an accident eerily similar to the one suffered by Egan Bernal three years ago—an impact that nearly cost Bernal his life.
Speaking to Noticias Caracol, Captain González Muñoz provided details of the incident: “A 19-year-old cyclist, who was part of the Boyacá Cycling League, failed to notice a vehicle parked for maintenance and roadwork adjustments.”
Cárdenas was known for his exceptional climbing ability and was part of the Boyacá Race of Champions program. He finished second in the 2021 Tour of the Future and gained valuable experience racing in Europe in 2022, where he spent six months last year. His career was still in full development, with a promising future ahead.
May he rest in peace, and may this bet yet another reminder that cycling must improve its safety standards.
