Caleb Ewan: "It feels like my Giro is going downhill"

Caleb Ewan has struggled until now to get a stage win at the Giro d'Italia, with crashes, mechanicals and serious climbing difficulties hampering his chances.

The 'Pocket Rocket' has admitted on Instagram that yesterday was a very complicated day in his Giro stint: "My hellish Giro got a sequel today. I was released on my own with eighty kilometers to go and only just reached the time limit. Since my crash in the first stage, it feels like my Giro is going downhill."

On the opening day Ewan was in contention for the opening uphill sprint in Visegrád, however ever since the crash on the finale, he's often been dispatched from the peloton early on when the pace goes up in the ascents. He's missed out on the sprint on stage five, and yesterday he was one of the first riders dropped, crossing the line 31 minutes after Biniam Girmay and alone - only four minutes within the time limit.

Today, Ewan is one of the main favourites in what may be his final opportunity in the Giro. He has confirmed that he will abandon the race early, and despite a flat finish the next two stages his climbing difficulties will put him in serious issues for both days. "Another sprint chance tomorrow [today] so I’m hoping to turn it around," he concluded.
