Caleb Ewan had a difficult day in the
Tour de France. The Australian rider fell behind the peloton and crossed the finish line in Megève at the last position.
“It's always hard after a rest day. I had really bad legs today,” said Ewan. Monday was the rest day for the riders, and it was special for Ewan since it was his birthday which he celebrated with his family. The rider also rules out the possibility of Covid-19 infection impacting his performance. "I had bad legs at the start. I had to drop out of the peloton very quickly. Luckily my teammates were able to help me today. Is there a specific reason for my bad day? I don't know, but I don't feel sick, no," Ewan told WielerFlits.
His teammates were there to help him but the Australian was worried about holding back his team. "I was a bit worried about the time limit today. Fortunately, the team got into a rhythm quickly, so I didn't have to go all the way at the last minute, and I didn't want that. If I didn't make it, they'd have to leave the Tour as well," describes Ewan.
With the tour entering the Alps, upcoming stages will be very tricky, with several uphill finishes. "It will be even tougher days. I will need better legs," concludes Ewan. He currently holds the 158th position in GC, 1 hour and 55 minutes behind overall leader
Tadej Pogacar.
