Jonas Vingegaard experienced a tense moment on Monday after being involved in a crash while training in southern Spain. The incident had no major consequences and the Danish rider is in good condition, Team Visma | Lease a Bike confirmed shortly after it happened.
The Dutch squad explained that the mishap occurred during a routine training session and that, despite the initial scare, any discomfort was minor. The team itself wanted to reassure everyone by stating their rider has no significant injuries and will be able to continue his programme without setbacks.
The crash, reportedly involving another cyclist on the road, also prompted Visma to issue a safety message. The team stressed the importance of taking extra care and respecting the space of professionals when they train on open roads, in order to avoid unnecessary risk.
It ended as a scare for Vingegaard, but the team used the moment to reiterate the need to prioritise safety and coexistence during training.

This is how Visma explained the incident

“Jonas Vingegaard suffered a crash during a training ride on Monday. Fortunately, he is fine and did not sustain any serious injuries.
As a team, we would like to urge fans who ride bikes to always prioritise safety. For their own wellbeing and that of others, please allow riders to train and give them as much space and calm as possible.”

Vingegaard’s plans

Jonas Vingegaard opens his 2026 season with a clear schedule after winning last year’s Vuelta a España, setting the Giro d’Italia, starting on 08.05, as his first major target. Before that, the Dane will fine-tune his form at the UAE Tour from 16.02 and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya from 23.03, races that will shape his build-up. After the Giro, Vingegaard will switch focus back to the Tour de France, which starts on 04.07, where he will again try to get the better of Tadej Pogacar.
