UAE Team Emirates took responsibility of the
Trofeo Calvia and attacked the race hard in it's second half. It was a plan that wasn't far from working, but
Brandon McNulty suffered from brutal cramps towards the end and could only manage a third place for the Emirati team.
The American made the winning selection of the hilly race together with Aleksandr Vlasov and eventual winner Simon Carr. He looked in fine form, and launched an attack in the final kilometers. “However, I suffered from cramps in both legs in the final," he said in a post-race interview. "It's the first race of the year and something like this can happen. All in all, I have a good feeling about this.”
McNulty could not match an attack from the Russian in the final three kilometers and could only see the victory go up the road whilst he struggled to keep pedaling. A nightmare situation for the 25-year old, who arrived at the finish 27 seconds the winning duo.
“The team rode very strongly today and we stuck to the plan, by making the race hard and attacking early. I also felt good all day, but at the end I got cramps. But it should work out for the next races here in Mallorca," he concludes.
