UAE Team Emirates came to the
Tour de Romandie with plenty GC contenders.
Brandon McNulty was one of them, the American failed to show his best level early in the race but due to his poor place in the standings, he benefited from the good weather to win today's time-trial.
“It was almost all uphill, until three kilometers before the finish. From there you had a super fast descent, so you had to keep up the pace until the top. But I had surprisingly good legs today," McNulty said in a post-race interview. His early time was a strong and dangerous one, and it turned out that only the other riders who had also lost time the previous days would go on to match it.
McNulty's time stood against that of Magnus Sheffield and Felix Grossschartner, whilst later in the day the GC riders had to race with wet roads. This made it very complicated to match his time, and he got away with a stage win - his fifth of the season, the second against the clock.
“I came here for a classification, but the last two days I was clearly not at my usual level. It's a bit of fatigue I think," he explains. "It's been a long spring already, this is my last race for a while. I had a really bad feeling, but today was a little better. It was nice to feel that I could really race again.” His teammate Juan Ayuso rode into the yellow jersey, which McNulty will work for tomorrow to try and keep.
