38-year-old Asleigh Moolman is one of the most experienced riders in the women's peloton. The AG Insurance-Soudal Team rider is a formidable opponent on the bike, but is also doing well off the bike. The South African is committed to helping young women in her home country.
"Virtual cycling creates an opportunity to increase women's participation and empowerment," said the South African in conversation with Cycling Weekly. "They feel safer and more confident interacting with other riders in the comfort of their home."
Thus the Rocacorba Collective was born, an extension of Girona-based Rocacorba Cycling. Now the experienced rider is using her status in the professional peloton to reduce barriers for women in her home country of South Africa. The next step is the collaboration with Khaltsha Cycles, a bicycle shop that operates from shipping containers in Khayelitsha Township.
The partnership aims to make cycling more accessible to disadvantaged communities. Already, the partnership's efforts are paving the way for building E-Centers for teaching and training. The ultimate vision is to create a path for African women to compete in Europe. "The bicycle is the equalizer that brings people together, but the virtual cycling world is the web that connects us," says Moolman-Pasio.
