Alpecin–Deceuninck rider set to retire age just 23: "This is not the path I would like to follow down"

In a surprising announcement, 23-year-old Maurice Ballerstedt of UCI WorldTeam Alpecin–Deceuninck has revealed his decision to step away from the WorldTour. The young German, who competed in the Vuelta a España in 2023, shared the news on Instagram, hinting at a shift in his career path that few expected so early.

Ballerstedt expressed his sentiments and reasoning in a heartfelt post, stating, “Announcing with this the end of my time in the Worldtour.” Despite his young age, he has taken time to reflect on his future and ultimately decided to move in a different direction.

“After big consideration I decided for myself this is not the path I would like to follow down. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this amazing journey,” he wrote, thanking those who supported him throughout his WorldTour experience.

While this marks the end of his time with Alpecin–Deceuninck, Ballerstedt’s cycling journey is far from over. He teased a new chapter starting in 2025, hinting at a different path within the sport. “Starting in 2025, I will be taking on a new chapter in cycling, racing, and bringing you along on the journey,” he shared, leaving fans curious and eager to see what lies ahead.

For Ballerstedt, the decision to retire from the WorldTour at such a young age reflects a personal and thoughtful choice. His announcement marks the beginning of a new adventure, as he seeks to explore a different facet of cycling.
