The
Tour Colombia could return to the UCI calendar in 2024. The race, which saw some of the world's top cyclists take on Colombian roads in 2018 and 2020, had been suspended in 2021 due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, according to reports from Antena 2, thanks to the Colombian Cycling Federation and the influence of some private companies, the Tour Colombia is preparing to regain its place on the international scene. Local cyclists such as
Egan Bernal, Sergio Higuita, Daniel Martínez, Rigoberto Urán and international figures such as
Chris Froome, Julian Alaphilippe and Richard Carapaz have raced this event in the past.
Mauricio Vargas, president of the Colombian Cycling Federation (FedeCiclismo), has been a tireless driving force in the effort to return the Tour Colombia to the international scene. In recent statements, Vargas noted that "we have worked hard on several fronts and with the government and private enterprise" to ensure the return of the competition. His determination and dedication have paid off, as the Tour Colombia has been included in the UCI calendar for next year.
Details of the Tour Colombia 2024
While no official announcement has yet been made on the specific details of the 2024 Tour Colombia, sources consulted by Antena 2 suggest that the race will take place from February 6 to 11, 2024. In addition, it is expected to have a UCI 2.1 category, which means it will attract some of the most important teams in world cycling. This could allow the participation of teams of the likes of INEOS, Jumbo Visma, UAE Team Emirates, EF Education, among others.
Thus, like Chris Froome at his peak, the organizers would try to attract riders like
Tadej Pogacar,
Jonas Vingegaard or Primoz Roglic to participate in the Colombian race;
