Alexis Vuillermoz announces that he will retire from professional cycling at the end of the season

At the age of 35 years old, Alexis Vuillermoz has announced his retirement from the sport, with the 2024 season set to be his final year as a professional cyclist. The TotalEnergies rider has won stages at both the Tour de France and the Critérium du Dauphiné during his career and he also finished in fourth place at Il Lombardia.

The Frenchman began his 13-year-long career at Saur-Sojasun in 2012 as a stagiaire before joining the team as a fully fledged rider in 2013. He then moved to AG2R La Mondiale in 2014, staying with the team until 2020 before joining Team Total Direct Energie for the 2021 season, where he has been ever since.

His win on stage 8 of the 2015 Tour de France came atop one of the most iconic climbs at the Tour de France in recent years, as he attacked inside the final 800 metres and held off the likes of Dan Martin, Alejandro Valverde and Peter Sagan to take the victory on the Mûr-de-Bretagne.

In a post on Instagram in which he announced his retirement, Vuillermoz wrote “it is with lots of emotion and pride that I announce that 2024 will be my final professional season”.

He is still looking forward to the remainder of his last year in the peloton though, as he went on to say “beautiful races still await me and I will continue to give the best of myself to not have a single regret”.
