Alexey Lutsenko is no stranger to starting off his season strong and yesterday he's proved that capacity once again by winning the first edition of the
Clásica Jaén Paraiso Interior in dominant fashion in his first race day of the year.
“I am really happy to take this win in my first race of the season. Together with the team I spent two good weeks at the altitude training camp in Teide and today I felt ready and motivated to try something. Last year I already won a gravel race – Serenissima Gravel, so I knew what to expect," Lutsenko said in a post-race interview.
From early on Lutsenko looked the strongest in the race, attacking solo in the second lap dropping his rivals, but was then later caught as the chasing group worked hard on the descent to reel the Kazakh back in. However in the third lap, a seated attack in the gravel climb had no response and the 29-year old had no competition upon blowing up the race once again.
"The race turned out to be a hard one with a lot of climbs and gravel sectors. But the team helped me to save some energy for the decisive part and then I just did my best in attacks. I knew that Tim Wellens can be a real favorite in this kind of races, so my plan was to attack earlier and to try to go solo and it worked out perfectly. Well, it is a very nice feeling to win in the first race of the season! Now I am looking forward to the next race –
Vuelta a Andalucia," he completed.
Alongside
Miguel Ángel López he will be leading the
Astana Qazaqstan Team at the Vuelta a Andalucia which starts tomorrow, Vincenzo Nibali was supposed to be riding with the duo but has contracted Covid-19 and will no be present.
