After a strong season last year, Neilson Powless is looking to take another step forward in 2024, as he sets his sights on a Monument victory. The American rider impressed in several one-day races last season, finishing in the top-10 at both Milano-Sanremo and the Ronde van Vlaanderen, along with several other top results at races such as Dwars door Vlaanderen, Clásica de San Sebastián and the World Championships Road Race in Glasgow.
This season, Powless will once again be targeting a strong result in the Classics, as he stated in an interview with Cyclingnews that “a Monument win would probably be the biggest goal that I have right now. I feel it is attainable, a realistic goal that I have for myself. That’s not easy by any means, it’s very, very, very difficult to win one”.
He also spoke about his other plans for this season, as he said that “my first peak of the year will be at some point this spring, at a cobbled Classic. Hopefully, I can win one of those. Then a second peak will be for the Tour de France. So that kind of falls into Tour-Olympics, so close together and hopefully I can ride the same peak”.
Having held the polka-dot jersey for thirteen stages at last year’s Tour de France, Powless will be looking for more success at this year’s race. Additionally, with a course that suits him for the Olympic Games Road Race in Paris, he will definitely be in contention for a medal, which could make it a very exciting summer for the EF Education-EasyPost rider.
