Meeus started his year at the Etoile de Bessèges where despite not being one of the main riders on the table, he blasted up the initial hilltop finish in Bellegarde to the surprise of many, coming close to victory on day 1. The next day he finished fourth, but the German team abandoned as a whole after the stage 3 incident in which several other teams decided to abandon the race. In his return to competition, Meeus was one of the many riders who went the wrong way on the opening day of the
Volta ao Algarve and sprinted for a result that wouldn't exist - he actually sprinted at the head of the peloton, but on an open road.
Hence it's safe to say that luck hadn't been on the 26-year old, but that streak ended this Friday afternoon in Tavira. Meeus was well positioned into the final sprint, where a lot of riders chaotically moved around, and launched a winning sprint ahead of Alberto Dainese and Biniam Girmay. A confidence-inducing victory, and he will be the only sprinter that will not have this weight on his shoulders anymore when the peloton arrives in Faro this Saturday.
