Patrick Lefevere has revealed he spent 24 days in hospital, confirming the news in a personal message shared on his social channels. The former boss and founder of the Soudal - Quick-Step team admitted the past month has been one of the toughest periods of his life, but says he is finally able to return home.
The 70-year-old wrote: “After 24 very difficult days and being seriously ill, I’ve received the best possible care. I am now allowed to leave the hospital. A long recovery still lies ahead, but I’m on the right path. Thank you to all specialists and nurses for the excellent treatment. Patrick."

A worrying repeat after earlier health scare in 2025

It marks the second time this year Lefevere has required urgent medical attention. Back in March, he was rushed to intensive care after becoming unwell at a restaurant, where a sudden drop in blood pressure left him unable to continue celebrating a birthday meal. He was discharged the following day from Maria Middelares after tests revealed nothing concerning, though he acknowledged at the time to HLN: “I’ve had low blood pressure all my life.”
Lefevere’s health history has long been a topic of concern. The veteran manager previously battled pancreatic cancer and also lives with diabetes — conditions that have made the past year particularly delicate.

A year on from stepping back from team leadership

December 2024 marked the end of an era as Lefevere stepped aside from his role as CEO of Soudal Quick-Step, handing responsibility to Jurgen Fore. Reflecting on the decision at the time, he admitted: “I feel that it’s time to stop. I’m not getting any younger and, of course, there’s my lifestyle. I may slow down a bit, but I’ll definitely stay active.”
His latest update shows that “slowing down” may now become a necessity rather than a choice — though in typical Lefevere fashion, he insists the focus is on recovery, not retreat.
With a long rehabilitation still ahead, the cycling world will be watching closely — and wishing him strength — as he continues his return to full health.
