At the upcoming
Deutschland Tour,
Team Visma | Lease a Bike will expect to be front and centre in the fight for stage wins, especially in the sprints. The reason? A generational combination of one of the peloton's leading stars
Wout van Aert, and 20-year-old British sensation
Matthew Brennan.
Van Aert has proven himself a more than capable rider already in 2025, winning a stage of the Giro d'Italia on debut, and famously taking the win on the final stage of the Tour de France, outkicking Tadej Pogacar on Montmartre to end his Grand Tour campaigns for the year on a high. Brennan meanwhile, has added an incredibly impressive 9 wins to his palmares this season so far, four of which at World Tour level, not bad for someone who was still a teenager until the start of this month (August ed.).
As mentioned, at the 2025 Deutschland Tour, Van Aert and Brennan will now combine for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, with sports director Robert Wagner hoping the experienced Belgian can pass on all his knowledge to the younger Brennan. “Matthew and Wout will have to deliver the results together,"
explains Wagner in a press release on Visma's official website. "Matthew will get his chances in the sprints, with Wout providing support. Wout will lead out the sprints and share his experience with Matthew. It’s fantastic to see a rider like Wout working in that way with a young talent like Matthew. We’ll see how things unfold in the tougher stages.”
For Wagner, the Deutschland Tour also marks an emotional mark in his career. “The last stage finishes in Magdeburg — my hometown. That’s really special for me," says the DS. "It’s great to coach this race in my home country. I’ll definitely have goosebumps riding the last local laps. It’s been a long time since we’ve had such a big cycling event in Magdeburg.”
