The cycling world will see a long-anticipated addition to
its women’s calendar in 2025, with the confirmation of the Women’s Milan-San
Remo. The prestigious race, one of the five Monuments of cycling, will finally
have its female edition, marking a significant moment for the sport. Organizers
RCS Sport reached an agreement with the Trofeo Alfredo Binda to solidify the
addition of the women’s race next year.
The men’s Milan-San Remo has been an iconic event in cycling
history, with recent editions won by sprint specialist
Jasper Philipsen in 2024
and all-rounder
Mathieu van der Poel in 2023. The addition of a women’s version
comes as the latest step in cycling’s broader push for gender equality,
following in the footsteps of other spring Monuments such as Paris-Roubaix,
Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and the Tour of Flanders, all of which now feature
women’s races. With Milan-San Remo joining the fold, all the spring Monuments
will now have a women’s edition, making 2025 a landmark year for women’s
cycling.
The introduction of the race has been met with excitement,
though for now, it is not included in the Women’s World Tour calendar.
Organizers and riders alike are hopeful that it will eventually be elevated to
this prestigious level. The move to include the race comes after lengthy
negotiations, with the primary obstacle being a clash with the Trofeo Alfredo
Binda, a prestigious one-day women’s race traditionally held on the same
weekend as Milan-San Remo. To accommodate the new race, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda
will now be moved forward by a week, with its likely date being Sunday, 16th
March, 2025. This scheduling change allows for the Women’s Milan-San Remo to
take place on the same day as the men’s race, preserving the iconic calendar
slot for both events.
Cycling fans will eagerly await this exciting new chapter in
women’s racing as the legendary Milan-San Remo, affectionately known as La
Classicissima, opens its roads to the female peloton.
