The 2026 Tour de France is facing an unprecedented logistical challenge, with extreme heat and wildfires raising concerns over the opening stages in Spain and southern France. Temperatures of up to 44°C have fuelled multiple fires on both sides of the French-Spanish border, prompting organisers to monitor the situation closely and prepare contingency plans if conditions deteriorate.
According to race organisers, no stage has ever been cancelled because of wildfires or extreme heat in the Tour's 113-year history. However, route director Thierry Gouvenou admitted the current conditions are unlike anything previously experienced.
“It is a major concern for us. We have experienced heatwaves before, but the situation is much worse now because the ground is already extremely dry after the exceptionally high temperatures in May and June,” Gouvenou said.
Tour director Christian Prudhomme also confirmed that organisers are on standby and ready to modify the route from one day to the next if necessary.

Stages 3 and 4 face the greatest threat

The biggest concerns surround Stages 3 and 4. Monday's Pyrenean stage from Granollers to Les Angles finishes in the Pyrénées-Orientales, only a few dozen kilometres from major wildfires near Platja d'Aro and Calonge on Spain's Costa Brava, where around 50,000 residents have been placed under lockdown. Strong winds could also carry smoke towards the race route.

Tuesday's stage from Carcassonne to Foix passes through Occitanie, one of the regions hardest hit by drought. Wildfires have also broken out near Béziers and Perpignan, forcing road closures and the evacuation of thousands of campers.
French authorities have had a heat and safety protocol in place since May, and if the fires remain uncontrolled or smoke causes air quality to deteriorate, racing could be suspended. Organisers are also monitoring whether emergency services, currently heavily engaged in firefighting operations, will have sufficient resources available to guarantee the race's safety.
