Stage 1 of the 2025
Tour de France was far from an ideal start to
Primoz Roglic's latest quest to win the Maillot Jaune. After missing a decisive split late on, the
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe finished 39 seconds down on rivals such as
Tadej Pogacar and
Jonas Vingegaard.
Despite the early disappointment however, Roglic's team are getting too downhearted just yet. After all, there are still 20 stages and plenty of time to put things right. “The stage didn’t go perfectly, but Primoz still finished alongside several other GC contenders,” explained Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe sports director
Rolf Aldag after the stage, in conversation with Val 202.
“We consciously chose not to take risks — and we won’t tomorrow either. But Sunday’s stage will be even more demanding and will require us to take a few more chances," continues Aldag, explaining the team's lack of presence at the front of the peloton on stage 1 as the bunch split and the likes of Pogacar and Vingegaard rode away from Roglic. "Stage 2 is a much more technical stage than today’s. We weren’t in an ideal position, but we managed to limit the damage,” he concludes the post-stage review.
