Monte Lussari will decide the outcome of the Giro d'Italia. Only 26 seconds separate Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas, a gap that will be difficult to close, but not impossible. Jumbo-Visma are confident that the Slovenian can put on a good performance.
“This Giro is now approaching its absolute boiling point. As it stands now, it's going to be a game of seconds. Thomas and Primož are not giving each other an inch at the moment," team DS Arthur van Dongen said in a press release. "We would have liked to have grabbed the last four bonus seconds, but in the end we are satisfied with how the stage ended.”
Jumbo-Visma have played their cards, and now it is all up to Roglic. The gap could've been smaller but the modest breakaway survived the queen stage to battle for the win, with Roglic coming ever so close to taking bonus seconds that would see him closer to pink. Now, with the decisive effort only hours away, the very small differences that Thomas and Roglic inflicted on each other will make for a dramatic time-trial on a brutal climb.
“We are going to start the climb time trial with confidence. Hopefully the fans present will give Primož even more energy and fighting spirit than he already has," van Dongen concludes. "It was fantastic to see how many Slovenians were already shouting ahead of him on Saturday. We believe in the highest achievable”
