Urko Berrade has won the Classica Camp de Morvedre, to pick up a win in the very early stages of the season. Berrade held off a late surge from Nicolas Breuillard and Sergio Chumil to take the win.
In the UCI 1.2 race, there was a group including Alexys Brunel (Total Energies), Morne Van Nierkerk, Jack Brought and Nils Aebersold (Lidl-Trek Future) who had managed to escape from the peloton. From that group Alexys Brunel made another move, and the Frenchman was clearly on a very strong day, but he was caught on the final climb of the day.
Then it was the turn of Urko Berrade, of Equipo Kern Pharma, to make a move and he led over the summit. With 5km to go Berrade had managed to survive a strong pursuit from those behind on the descent, and still let with 15 seconds to spare. Berrade was of course part of the incredible Equipo Kern Pharma team that won three Vuelta Espana stages last season, and he was one of the winners.
And there was no stopping Berrade today, as he picked up a great victory to start his season off strongly. He'll be hoping this is a sign of things to come in 2025.
