A day for the sprinters, and after several second places Trek - Segafredo finally got their main reward as Mads Pedersen sprinted to the win on the 13th stage with a dominant advantage.
The temperatures were high and the wind meaningful on the day. The conditions were not unfavourable for a breakaway, but only three riders took the risk: Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Joan Bou (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH).
The trio never had much of a gap, and the peloton could enjoy a calm day in the peloton. Bou and Okamika resisted the surge of the peloton with just under 10 kilometers to go, but there was nothing to do to prevent a bunch sprint - in whichever form it was to happen.
The teams occupied the entire width of the road into the final kilometers. INEOS, then Movistar then Jumbo-Visma set a high pace into the final kilometer, with all sprinters present near the front. Pascal Ackermann launched his sprint early in a bid to surprise and it looked to be a very dangerous move into the final straight. Only Mads Pedersen was near the German, but as Ackermann cracked Pedersen continued a powerful sprint with broad daylight over the rest of the field.
He crossed the line isolated and thrilled, with Bryan Coquard sprinting to second place and Pascal Ackermann managed to just hold on the third position - with the GC riders arriving safely in the peloton.
