The final stage into Madrid is usually a calm day, but it was anything but for the sprinters who had one more day to perform, and the win was taken by Juan Sebastián Molano who outsprinted Mads Pedersen in surprising fashion as he looked to leadout Ackermann.
The last day at the Vuelta started as a celebratory day, as the riders finally reached Madrid after a very hard three weeks. It was a short day on the bike with a late afternoon calm start, but a furious start as the riders looked to fight for the win.
Julius Johansen and Luke Plapp went up the road with around 45 kilometers to go in an attempt to surprise, and they forced the sprinter teams to burn some matched as they took a very fast average which saw the duo only caught with just under one kilometers to go.
The duo pushed the bar incredibly high with the leadouts having to severely force the pace to catch up. UAE Team Emirates and Trek - Segafredo had the men into the final sprint, with Mads Pedersen launching his sprint first however UAE took an incredible surprise as Pascal Ackermann could not go over leadout man Juan Sebastián Molano, who held the speed and rode into the win in Madrid. Pedersen finished second and won the overall classification, with Mads Pedersen finishing third.
The peloton rode through the finish with many smiles present, as Remco Evenepoel confirmed his first Grand Tour win.
