Juan Pedro López attacked with seven kilometers to go, with Chris Harper doing the same and heading solo off the front. Astana mainly pushed the pace, but had to settle back as they lacked the numbers, and INEOS Grenadiers took over control of the peloton until the start of the steeper section of the ascent in the final 2.5 kilometers.
Harper was immediately caught, and
Miguel Ángel López quickly made his move. INEOS didn't directly respond but had the riders to set a high pace and kept the gap stable, bringing him back with 1.7 kilometers to go, and reducing the fight to four riders inside the final kilometer.
João Almeida bridged across to the group, attacked in the last 400 meters, and then managed to outsprint López to take the stage win. Sivakov arrived in third position, inside the necessary time gap and successfully conserving the lead to win the Vuelta a Burgos.
