UAE Team Emirates have ridden aggressively all day long at today's queen stage of the
Volta a Catalunya and they have gotten the profit from it, with
João Almeida taking the win of the fourth stage.
The fight for the breakaway was intense and only in the first climb of the day was a group settled, leading to a strong escape group of climbers to go up the road. Mark Donovan (Team DSM), Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) and Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) composed this group, which was a threat for the overall classification so it was never given much freedom.
There was a fast pace throughout the day, but the peloton always seemed under control. Most of the break was caught, with Armirail the only survivor on the bottom of the final ascent to Boí Taüll. The final ascent started with a hard pace by Arkéa who looked to harden the pace, with a flurry of attacks coming with O'Connor included, but reeled in by the group that was still well composed.
George Bennett attacked with 10 kilometers to go, caught Armirail and the duo survived until the last 4 kilometers when the second round of attacks started in the peloton. Richard Carapaz put in the first attack, with
Sergio Higuita following, but later reeled in as João Almeida put his nose in the wind and reeled in the group, putting in a dig of his own, dropping race leader Ben O'Connor who suffered immensely in the final two kilometers.
Almeida, Quintana, Higuita and Carapaz each attacked, but the three first went into the final kilometer on equal terms. Almeida was the first to launch the sprint, Quintana went over him into the final corner, but the Portuguese had the power to take the sprint win in the end.
