Wout van Aert got back to his best level in time for the Olympic Games, the Belgian rode to third on the time-trial and today looked to have his best legs as he matched Mathieu van der Poel up the Montmartre climb. But his ambitions to get a medal ended with a crash that was not visible on TV broadcast.
The crash happened as van Aert and van der Poel rode with Tom Pidcock and Mathias Vacek somewhere along the final kilometers, that were very chaotic and with groups all over the road. The Visma rider crashed against the barriers after overcooking a corner. The Belgians still managed to celebrate however with a victory from Remco Evenepoel whilst van Aert crossed the line in 37th place.
