Yesterday was a glorious day for
Trek - Segafredo's
Juan Pedro López who once again impressed and will keep leading the
Giro d'Italia for several more days if nothing abnormal happens, however it didn't come without some incidents on the final climb.
Although having almost missed TV cameras, in an helicopter shot it was possible to see with 16.9 kilometers to go a swerve in the peloton, which almost drove López off the road. It's unclear the reason for that move to have happened within the peloton however
Sam Oomen was the rider in front of the Spaniard and although it is not clear in the video below, it has been confirmed that López consequently through a bidon onto the Jumbo-Visma rider.
López said following the incident: "Before any questions, I want to say sorry to Sam Oomen because in one moment of tension, he tried to push me and I lost my mind and threw a bottle at him. I want to say sorry."
With the peloton riding at high speed just before the start of the categorized ascent to Blockhaus, it was bad timing for the Spaniard who had to put his foot down yet again during the final climb due to a swerve in the GC group.
Nevertheless he managed to save the day and against all odds keep the pink jersey as many behind him failed to perform. Teammate Giulio Ciccone being one of them, loosing GC ambitions on home ground in what is a very hard hit on the Italian. "You never know what he can do, he's had a bad day today, but I'm sure he'll be able to turn things around in the days to come," López said of his teammate.
