Alejandro Valverde is coming to an end of his long career, and will be this month setting sights on the Giro d'Italia, where he will be targeting stages instead of focusing on the overall classification.
“The general classification is very difficult at my age, I hope to win a stage,” he told the press ahead of the penultimate Grand Tour of his long illustrious career. This Giro d'Italia will only be his second - in a total of 31 Grand Tours started - however he does come to Italy with ambitions, and those revolve around a stage win.
The first day, finishing in Visegrád, is a good opportunity for the Spaniard who comes in with strong form into the Giro, however he's cautious about the possibilities of taking pink on the opening day: "The first stage is demanding, but in itself doable for sprinters. Everyone appears strong at the start, Van der Poel is doing well. But we still have 20 stages to win after this.”
“For me it was important to do the Giro. I've only competed once in my entire career, so in my last year I wanted to come back," he added. Valverde will be riding for stage wins, aswell as possibly in support of Iván Sosa who comes fresh off a win at the Vuelta a Asturias - the same preparation Richard Carapaz had before winning the 2019 edition for the team.
