Just days after becoming the
first team to announce their full lineup for the 2025
Tour de France, Uno-X
Mobility have been dealt an immediate and painful setback.
Jonas Abrahamsen,
one of the squad’s key breakaway specialists, has suffered a broken collarbone
in a crash during the opening stage of the
Baloise Belgium Tour, casting major
doubt over his participation in July’s Grand Départ.
Abrahamsen, one of the breakout
performers of the 2024 Tour de France with multiple appearances in high profile
breakaways, went down hard in the final kilometres of stage one in Belgium. The
crash occurred when he was unable to avoid a rider ahead of him, resulting in a
heavy slide and visible injuries. He was unable to continue and was taken to
hospital immediately.
“Medical examination and multiple
scans have shown that Jonas suffered a broken collarbone after his fall in the
first stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour,”
Uno-X Mobility confirmed on social
media. “He will visit a shoulder specialist in a day or two and then the next
steps will be mapped out.”
The team added, “A plan will be
drawn up to help him recover as quickly as possible. We would like to thank the
staff of AZ Zeno Knokke-Heist for their care and professionalism.”
It’s a frustrating and cruel
twist of fate for both rider and team. Abrahamsen had been named in the Uno-X
Tour squad alongside Soren Waerenskjold, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Andreas
Leknessund, Markus Hoelgaard, Anders Johannessen, Tobias Halland Johannessen,
and Stian Fredheim. But his participation now hangs in the balance, with just
over two weeks until the race begins in Florence on July 5.
The injury, however, could reopen
the door for
Alexander Kristoff. The 37-year-old Norwegian veteran is in the
final season of his long career and had not originally been listed among the
eight riders for Uno-X. With Abrahamsen sidelined, Kristoff may be the most
obvious replacement, offering experience, and one last shot at another Tour
stage win.
