The Tour de Pologne has over the past years been marked by numerous tragedies. The death of Bjorg Lambrecht and the life-threatening crash of Fabio Jakobsen marked the race dearly, and last year Nicolas Debeaumarché was seriously injured after a fall on Polish roads. The hearts of many have been clenching this week too as Filippo Baroncini was gravely hurt in a fall during stage 2, and the UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider has been put in an induced coma.
The scenes of the crash were described by his compatriot Jacopo Mosca in words to Quibicisport on the day: “Unfortunately, I saw Baroncini — and I really wish him all the best because it was a horrible scene to witness. I know he’s in good hands, but personally it really shook me. I saw him lying completely still, in a bad position against a wall. I was just relieved to see he was breathing, because it really could have been a tragedy.”
This was the day in which the stage was neutralized, with several ambulances being required to treat injured riders of a mass crash that included race leader Paul Lapeira and GC favourite Vacek. UAE provided an update on the Italian later that day however what that revealed was the brutality of the extent of his injuries.
“He sustained multiple facial injuries, including a fractured cervical vertebra (no neurological fallout), and facial and clavicular fractures. He is currently being taken care of in hospital and is under the supervision of our medical team.”
The 24-year old has been in the hospital ever since and an update has been provided by team DS Mauro Gianetti in words to Tuttobiciweb. "He did not sustain any damage to any vital organs during the crash; Filippo's life is not in danger".
"Our rider is in an induced coma. The doctors have put him under deep sedation (put him in a deep sleep to reduce consciousness, ed.), and his condition is stable,"
