Tre Valli Varesine 2026 preview, profile, favourites & predictions - Evenepoel, Pidcock and McNulty amongst main favourites
Cycling
Tre Valli Varesine, to be raced on the 6th of October, is part of the late Italian autumn classics and is one of the most prestigious one-day races of the cycling season. Despite not being part of the World Tour, it brings in plenty big names every year, and is widely used as a warm-up for Il Lombardia. Below, you will find the preview, favourites and route of the race.
The race was first held in 1919 and was won by Italian Pietro Bestetti. Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Gaienni Motta, Francesco Moser, Gianni Bugno, Claudio Ciapucci, Davide Rebellin and Vincenzo Nibali are all part of Italy's long list of winners in this race.
Eddy Merckx won it back in 1968, before his Tour de France domination. Despite its list of top winners, only in the 2010's did the palmarès get more diversity. Dan Martin opened up the decade and Primoz Roglic closed it.
In 2020 the race was cancelled and in 2024 the bad weather neutralized it. Hence, this decade there have only been three winners. Alessandro De Marchi won it back in 2021, Ilan van Wilder won in 2023, whilst Tadej Pogacar was the winner of both 2022 and 2025 editions.
Profile: Busto Arsizio - Varese
Busto Arsizio - Varese, 198 kilometers
The 198-kilometer long race follows a traditional course, which will include many laps of a hilly circuit in and around Varese. There are 3100 meters of climbing and it's a race that isn't as difficult but resembles the World and European Championships in terms of dynamics.
Here we have a 4-kilometer ascent with a small flat section that will be ridden all day long, but in the final laps there is a similar but extra climb added in to the mix with ramps of over 10%. The final kilometer of the race is flat but this comes after a short climb where differences can still be made. A sprint finish isn't impossible however.
Preview Tre Valli Varesine 2026
The race features Remco Evenepoel and Tom Pidcock as the main favourites, two riders who typically thrive in the hilly classics and should be looking to have their best form at a period of the year with plenty big objectives.
Brandon McNulty, the reigning World Champion, will be present - and so will his compatriots Quinn Simmons and Matteo Jorgenson, all contenders to victory for this classic.
The likes of Christian Scaroni, Romain Grégoire, Mauro Schmid, Lenny Martínez, Giulio Ciccone, Ben Healy and Richard Carapaz are also amongst the favourites.
An in-depth preview will follow.

- PR to Tudor hardly means the end of WorldTour, they basically get invited to everything. Lidl-Trek German now??? Instead of asking if their football team is white enough, maybe that crowd should ask if their cycling team is German enough. American owner, main sponsor Hardly a German rider or staff member or equipment provider. Anyone have background to this decision, was it gifted to guarantee a long-term commitment from Lidl the way Ineos brown-nosed Netcompany?Jumpyjohn03-10-2026

- I will first look at results, not budgets to judge who is falling behind. I’m no fan of teams increasing budgets because others do, it’s an unhealthy spiral that can only lead to problems and complications. If cycling were as strict with spending rules as some other sports, UAE would now be digging themselves out a City sized hole.Jumpyjohn03-10-2026
- You forgot the probably fake doping disqualification at another Giro to ensure an Italian win. Probably worse than the individual hitting him to ensure a French TdF winner as it was orchestrated by cycling officials. I wouldn’t be surprised if mafia and betting had something to do with it but it was a smart enough tactic to avoid any kind of suspicion or investigation, almost impossible to prove but knowing the way the world and humanity works, completely plausible.Jumpyjohn03-10-2026

- It may look like that to you but I wonder. Given his strength, given the lack of commitment in front sometimes among some of the chasers, given his advantage on the climbs, given the small and changing gaps throughout, given a few more details we can assume, how come if he had so much energy to pull (and why would he just for the sake of those behind) he never rode a bit smarter or more efficiently by joining up with another group of chasers, either by detachment from wheelsuckers on the climb or falling back to other more collaborative chasers behind to form a bigger more useful chasing group. Something in all his work doesn’t make sense.Jumpyjohn03-10-2026
