Matteo Trentin has taken his first victory for Tudor Pro Cycling. After showing great form at the
Tour de Wallonie, the Italian classics specialist was the fastest today in the sprint of a hilly day, taking over the race lead as well in stage 4.
The fourth day of the race proved to be another difficult one where the overall classification was to be played at in the finale. On the days breakaway was a strong set of riders featuring Michael Gogl, William Blume Blevy, Cole Kessler, Lorenzo Milesi and Liam Slock.
The pace was never slow throughout the day and already with just under 60 kilometers to go attacks would start in the peloton with the likes of Louis Barré and Juan Pedro López opening it up on the climbs. TotalEnergies and Groupama - FDJ did most of the work trying to bring back the breakaway, a task that proved very difficult, with Slock and Milesi still holding out until the very final.
Slock was caught with only a few kilometers to go, with another set of riders going on the attack: Natnael Tesfatsion, Per Strand Hagenes, Samuel Watson and Pierre Gautherat; whilst Benoît Cosnefroy was also active.
But even this group couldn't succeed and was caught inside the final kilometer. A sprint was to decide the day, with Matteo Trentin taking the victory and also the race lead as he won the stage; beating
Timo Kielich and
Emilien Jeannière whilst Corbin Strong just missed out on the bonifications.
