Fabio Jakobsen has taken yesterday his second consecutive win at the
Tour de Hongrie, as the podium consisted of the exact same order for two days running. The Dutchman seemed unrivalled for both sprints, as he now leads the race ahead of another flat day.
"This is another team win. Iljo did a very good job at the front, controlling the breakaway the entire day, while the other guys kept me sheltered and made sure we stayed together when things became hectic," Jakobsen said in a post-race interview. "In the finale, as some teams passed us, I tried to follow Florian, then we lost each other a bit and got boxed in, but we remained confident we could find each other again and that’s what we did," he added.
Without the competition of stage one winner Olav Kooij and Arvid de Kleijn who abandoned after yesterday's mass crash near the finish, the task was easier for Jakobsen, who didn't have a dominating leadout for the sprint, but nevertheless took the win.
"After Florian peeled off the front, I surfed some wheels until 200 meters to go, and despite the wet roads, I could finish it off, which makes me happy. The yellow jersey comes as a nice bonus after this victory, which is good for the confidence following a month with no racing," he concluded. He took advantage of Matt Walls' early sprint to make a bid from the right, and carry enough speed to raise his arms again in glory.
